It’s not easy being Tommy Robinson, leader of the EDL. We know this because Stephen Yaxley Lennon is always banging on at us about how perfectly awful it is. Poor Tommy, never gets to see his wife and kids, endless death threats and attacks, constant accusations of ripping the EDL off for money, having to go to jail for doing stupid, unnecessary stuff, being called a Nazi all the time, blah, etc.
Tommy’s most challenging balancing act, though, is reconciling on one hand, the oft mentioned ( we’re not Nazis because of the… ) Jewish Division, plus the Zionist support in America ie Pamela Geller, Robert Spence and assorted Tea Party types: and on the other, the football casuals and neo-Nazi elements of EDL.
They have all fallen out before, back in the summer of 2011, when Jewish Division leader, Roberta “Mad Bob” Moore flounced for pastures new.
On the same day, June 30th, Pamela Geller blogged that she was withdrawing her support of the EDL http://www.therightperspective.org/2011/07/25/pam-geller-shrugs-off-edl/#sthash.qyz5ZxL3.fJAdqatb.dpbs
“It seemed to me at the time that the EDL was a genuine anti-jihad group, strongly pro-Israel as every legitimate anti-jihad group must be, since Israel is at the front lines of the global jihad, and resolutely rejecting racism and any form of actual neofascism.”
“However, it has become increasingly clear that the EDL has morphed and diverged from its original course. They now have clearly been infiltrated by the worst kind of influences, something that they had successfully staved off for years, and they’re no longer staving it off.”
The horrific Breivik massacre followed on 22nd July in Norway, and EDL seemed to go into what looked like a terminal decline. Hackers, Z Company, took down the main Facebook page, EDL’s poor public image was further muddied by alleged links to Breivik, demo turnouts descended to embarrassing levels, and Tommy ended up in the slammer for passport fraud this year, when he went to the States to speak at the International Freedom Defence Congress. An event organised, interestingly enough, by Geller and Spence’s Stop Islamisation of Nations. Whilst Tommy was inside, Unkle Kev and Hel Gower, left in charge, carried out an apparently suicidal leadership restructure.
Back to the present day, and Lee Rigby has been brutally murdered in Woolwich, support for EDL has soared again ( at least on Facebook ), and Pamela Geller is back on board, albeit hindered by the Home Secretary’s refusal to let her and Spence into Britain to speak at the Woolwich rally in June. Tommy’s pro Israel, Islamaphobic agenda seems to be back on track, justified by recent events in our own Old Blighty.
However, you canny aspire to be Britain’s largest street movement without foot-soldiers on the streets. Oh, well, rabid far-right, back ye’s come then. And instantly Tommy is under fire for being a Nazi again.
This was the photo that got him into trouble.
"Confronted by images of EDL supporters giving what appeared to be Nazi salutes, Mr Robinson said it was a “manipulated photo”.
Asked by presenter Andrew Neil if it was a “fascist Nazi salute by any definition” he said: “I am not a Nazi, I hate Nazis, I hate fascism.”
Mr Robinson said that the EDL had now advised that “whenever people hold their hands up like that we have told them to give the V” to avoid any misunderstanding.”
And here they are doing just that, in Sheffield in June.
BUT, here’s Tommy yesterday on Twitter, being asked if the Welsh Defence League, notoriously white supremacist, neo- Nazi loons, who were previously told to bugger off by EDL, were welcome back on demos.
How the heil’s this going to work? Well, i think Mad Bob gave us a clue in her comment on the subject, screenshot back in 2010.
Expose came across further evidence of this weird blend of ideologies, which by rights should be anathema to each other, recently, on EDL’s London Division.
The image looked vaguely familiar to our Ed, so he put it through a reverse image search. The image came up 31 times, predominately on neo-Nazi sites, including Stormfront; but not lampooning Muslims for supposedly damaging their own mosques and blaming EDL. Nope, the original image, which EDL presumably found while they were trawling through all those neo-Nazi web pages, looked like this.
Errrmmm…BUSTED. Bleat about the unfairness of it all till you’re blue in the face EDL. Recycling anti-semitic propaganda to apply to Muslims makes you look, well, a bit like Nazis, really.
Now if Expose were to photoshop their own version…
