An Asperger’s sufferer has been punched, kicked and stamped to death by two EDL supporters and there has been no EDL condemnation or apology. That, by their own reasoning which they apply to Muslims, means they support the murder of disabled people. They fully expect Muslims to come forward and publicly denounce, as a public act of penance, the actions of their fellow Muslims anywhere in the world. Failure to do so according to the EDL amounts to tacit support, worthy according to some of them with retaliatory attacks on random mosques. Now I’m not suggesting that a failure of the EDL to apologise should mean arson attacks on their homes, but it does show them up as being total hypocrites.
They refer to Muslims as a single community, as if all Muslims has close ties and weren’t extremely loosely connected via a shared religion. So Mr. Ali in Lahore is therefore part of the same ‘community’ as Mrs. Ahmed in Walthamstow and if Mr. Ali does something wrong, Mrs. Ahmed is guilty through association, even if she doesn’t know him, and must publicly apologise. That could be anything from apologising for a complete stranger running over a non-Muslim in a hit-and-run accident, rape of a non-Muslim, terrorism, or burning a British flag.
EDL leader Stephen Lennon said the EDL are a community in his speech at Peterborough. Now that a disabled young man has been brutally beaten to death by two EDL supporters, surely this ‘community’ should offer an apology? No it seems: the howls of indignation abound. The response by the EDL is that they don’t know these murderers, what they did has nothing to do with the EDL and how dare the Press mention the irrelevancy of them being EDL supporters.
This comes from the same people who demand the Media state “Muslim” instead of “Asian” when a criminal is being sought by the police. You see they think that a suspect’s religion, even if for obvious reasons it is unknown, is much more relevant than their physical appearance. That is an incorrect assumption that all Muslims are Asian, meaning that this is a racial issue. Again the EDL are hypocrites because they resent the EDL being classed as a white movement, claiming it is multi-racial, whilst simultaneously using ‘Asian’ and ‘Muslim’ interchangeably.
Will the EDL apologise for two of their supporters beating someone to death? Well considering that they still insist that they peacefully protest, I imagine the answer is no.
The EDL claim at every opportunity that any crime committed by a Muslim is down to what it says in the Koran.
There are about three dozen things in common between the EDL and basic Nazism.
In Mein Kampf Hitler wrote:
“He who is bodily and mentally not sound and deserving may not perpetuate this misfortune in the bodies of his children. The völkische [people’s] state has to perform the most gigantic rearing-task here. One day, however, it will appear as a deed greater than the most victorious wars of our present bourgeois era.”
So if the Koran tells Muslims to rape children or whatever crimes the EDL claim it commands them, therefore are the EDL commanded by Mein Kampf to kill disabled people? After all it is the ‘holy book’ of the Far Right and the EDL are Far Right. Sounds ridiculous, but the EDL love to snip single verses out of the Koran (and out of context) to prove anything they like about Muslims, which is equally ridiculous.
Expert opinion says that fascism is hostile to cultural pluralism and social division (Griffin, 1998) and propounds a theory of ethnopluralism (more than one race) based on cultural homogeneity (one culture) and the immiscibility (can’t mix) of civilisations (Merkl, 2003).
I’d say the EDL are clearly fascist. What they say is that they don’t believe Muslim culture is compatible with ours and although they don’t object to them living here as different races, they think they should be forced to adopt a standard British national culture.
There are many things in common between the EDL and fascism/Nazism. Far too many I’d say for it to be a simple case of reductio ad hitlerum, or a coincidence.
They are fascist, because they are intolerant of other cultures and seek to ban a culture they don’t believe fits their concept of British nationality.
EDL members say things like all Muslims should be gassed/shot/hung/nuked: genocide.
A large proportion of the EDL behave violently. Many intimidate political opponents and suggest acts of terrorism to achieve their goals.

At a basic level with their belief that the nation has to be defended from internal enemies - Communists and a particular ethnic group; their comparing their activities with the Crusades (something Himmler also did); their right wing politics; their concern that their people will be bred into a minority/out of existence (Yaxley-Lennon himself said that in the Pits n Pots interview); their intimidation of political opponents; their desecration of the ‘enemy’ minority’s places of worship; their belief that this is a war of civilizations; and their opinion that their political and ethnic opponents must be removed from the nation, are all symptomatic of Nazism. It’s only their tolerance of some blacks, Asians and Jews within their ranks that renders them fascist rather than neo-Nazi, although the Nazis allowed Jews into their party in the beginning.
The EDL also has a long fascist and neo-Nazi lineage. The British Union of Fascists led to the League of Empire Loyalists, which became the National Front, which split to become the British National Party, which formed the English Defence League. The founders, leaders and members of the EDL contain many BNP members, a neo-Nazi party based on its economic and racial policies.
